How much is the fuel surcharge?
The fuel surcharge will vary and is calculated monthly based on the price of fuel. A fuel surcharge is normal for regulated carriers such as Hawaii Superferry and the amount of the surcharge will vary depending on passenger and vehicle fares. Regardless of travel date, for tickets purchased from now through March 31, 2009, the fuel surcharge will be 10.50%. Should the cost of fuel go down, the fuel surcharge will also go down.
Does HSF establish the fuel surcharge rate?
Hawaii Superferry’s fuel surcharge is designed to adjust its passenger and vehicle fares monthly for changes in the cost of fuel, whether they are increases or decreases. When Hawaii Superferry established its fares in 2004 as part of its PUC tariff, a benchmark price of $.98/gallon was established. The fuel surcharge increases or decreases by 2% for each 10% change in the cost of fuel compared to the benchmark price, on a pro-rata basis. For example, if the average price of fuel is $3.92 per gallon, the percentage increase above the benchmark price would be 300% (a $2.94 cost increase divided by the $.98 benchmark price). The 300% increase in the cost of fuel results in a fuel surcharge of 60% (2% * 300%). The fare amount is adjusted by the fuel surcharge in effect for the month purchased, regardless of the date of travel. Promotional fares offered by Hawaii Superferry from time to time generally do not include a fuel surcharge.
Why is the fuel surcharge separate from the base fare?
Passenger and vehicle fares are regulated by the Public Utilities Commission and not subject to change without prior approval. The fuel surcharge will vary monthly depending on the cost of fuel and is in addition to the passenger and vehicle fares.
Is the fuel surcharge each way?
Yes, a fuel surcharge is in addition to each passenger and vehicle fare each way.
Where does the money go?
Hawaii Superferry does not make money on the fuel surcharge. It is a pass through that pays for the fluctuating cost of fuel.
Is the fuel surcharge permanent?
The fuel surcharge is an integral component of the Hawaii Superferry fare structure approved by the Public Utilities Commission. Should fuel prices go down, the fuel surcharge will also go down.
